Can I use regular silicone for repairing tanks?

Is it okay to use regular silicone to repair cracks in tanks? Because now that I think about it, I used regular bathroom silicone in my crestie tank, and they've been in it for 6 months so far with no problems.

Is it possible for regular silicone to produce fumes (even after dried) that can harm geckos?

Thanks in advance,

You can. I'd strongly suggest using 100% silicone. You can also use GE's Silicone II. I've had the kitchen and bath silicone break down over time on me versus 100% silicone. I'd give you some brand suggestions, but not sure what's immediately available to you in Canada.

As for fumes, 100% silicone should only off gas acetic acid (a strong vinegar smell) as it cures. Silicone should typically be skinned over within hours and cured within 24 hours. However, there will still be some off gasing beyond 24 hours. Most recommend waiting 3 days before moving animals back in. I'd leave the cage in a well ventilated room, possibly the garage if an option.

Another option for crack repairs, but only on the exterior of the cage, is waterproof tape. It's aluminum tape with a SUPER sticky adhesive that you can supposedly apply under water.

Thanks for all the information. I'm probably not going use the tank for awhile, so I'd easily be able to let it sit for a few days.

Thanks again!
