Hey guys.

i used to breed leos a few years ago when tremper albinos used to command the cash! I never had many geckos, maybe 6 or 7 tops. As without all the morphs like now there was no need. i had 1.1 normals, 1.1 jungles and a 1.2 albino trio (male albino to 2 female hets).
So nothing big like alot of guys on here. I never kept a gecko on to breed again at all.

So now im making a comeback, i am wanting to look a little more long term and linebreed my leos too improve the quality of the morphs.

I understand the concept of outbreeding beinng to bring new blood into an effectivly inbred line.
I wanted to hear how people put it into practice though.

Say im breeding a pair of SHCTB's and then i keep breeding the best quality siblings together.

1. How many generations should i be going before outcrossing?
2. How do i outcross without taking steps backward breeding wise?

Thanks guys. I am thinking i know the answer is just buy a new SHCTB and then start again? Is this what most of you do? What about you guys that are working on more radical morphs where buying a gecko of the same morph to outcross is more unrealistic?

Like i said i get the theory behind it, but want to hear from the breeders and hear it put in real/practical terms.

Thanks again
Mark

Hey Mark,

I'm going to be honest and up front about it, this is my first season breeding, but I will give you my opinion on the topic. For your first question, I would outcross about every 2 to 3 years, just to keep my bloodlines strong. For the second question, the best possible way to bring new blood into your lines is to get it else where. So buying a quality gecko from another breeder is your best bet.

Here is a pretty good link on what outcrossing can do for a line http://albeysreptiles.com/fasci.htm

Enjoy!

That info on Albeys site is great, I like to go back to read it every now and then just because you seem to pick up new things each time, very informative!!
