Can you get a "hot" female or infertile male at 86F?

my incubator isnt quite steady (no thanks to mgreptiles taking forever to ship my stuff), and it hits anywhere from 81-86. can this produce hot females or infertile males, or is that more like 88-90? i mean, im sure there is the possibility, but is it common? thanks.

Hi Justin,

I am having the same problem since I am in Phoenix and it's been in the 80's this week. I may end up just unplugging it and watching the temps. I sure would hate to end up with 30 males :main_no:

With that much of a flux in there, you'll be lucky to get a healthy hatchling at all. A 1 degree flux is about all I'd like to see in an incubator.

I understand why we as breeders don't want the temps to fluctuate. But doesn't the temp flux in the wild? I would figure that as long as it's not a spike then there wouldn't be a problem health wise.

I believe in the wild the eggs are burried a lot deeper than we see our females burry their eggs. At a deeper depth the temps would be more stable. 5 Degrees is a big jump.

I think a very slow raise or fall that spreads over a weeks time isn't too bad, but if it's in a few hours or in a day, I would say that is bad.

There are some people that use the same incubation method as Tremper, where you incubate at say 82 for females for 15-21 days then raise the temp up to 89. This has proven to produce more defects.

Yeah I didn't realize that a quick jump in temps would be harmful. I incubated my first few sets of eggs for females and then bumped it up to 88 to try and produce bright females. Well they all either molded or died from the temp spike. I only had two eggs that hatched last year. So this year I'm going for 85-86, so I should get a split in gender. No more fulling around with temps.

Im feel you on that. I orderd a ranco, heat tape etc about a week and a half ago and I still have not received my order. I went to faurnaclassifieds and there is allot of comments about his bus. practices. I will never buy from him again.
