Hey all! Matt and I just went camera shopping today and tried out both the Canon Rebel Xti and the Nikon D80. Hands down the Canon won with the same quality as the Nikon at a better price. Plus, the Canon focuses like mad fast! Just thought we'd let you all know just in case you were teetering on whether you should get one or the other. It's going to be our Christmas present to each other. :main_thumbsup: Can't wait to get it and finally get some amazing gecko shots!

Yeah, we played with the 60mm macro and we love it. So we're getting that and the stock lense for now since they are a bit costly. Then we can save and get some other cool stuff, like the super telephoto lense that's like 18 inches long!

I just picked up the XTi a few weeks ago. The kit lens didn't do much for me, but it was part of a deal I couldn't turn down. It's a decent lens, but I wanted something with a better depth of field and clean bokeh. I picked up the EF 50mm f1.4 USM Medium Telephoto lens. Holy freaking crap I love it. It's a prime lens so you can't zoom, but it's amazing for portraits, decent with macros and it still takes great landscapes. I haven't taken it off the cam yet.

So would you recommend getting it without the lens? And then just getting the one we want? Because it costs an extra 100 for the lens you said doesn't do much.

It's your call. I debated for a while. It was either the kit lens, or the lens I got. I finally said, hey I'm a newb I'll just get the kit lens with the deal. I was dumb and decided to get the other lens shortly after. I got spoiled by the new lens, and didn't take the time to learn on the kit lens nor give it a chance haha. It comes down to budget and what you really want out of your lens. There are usually always lesser/older versions of most lenses you can find cheaper to start out with. You can also look into to Sigma or Tamron lenses as well. Most are compatible and just as nice for a lower price.

Can I use my Sigma 28-89 and 70-210 macro lenses (for 35mm camera) in this digital camera?
Typically 35mms will work on DSLRs. The newer lenses for sure. I would do a little research on your lenses first though. I don't know about yours off the top of my head.

I want to let everyone know that Canons have the focus motor in the lenses ;) I can put my 80-200F2.8AF-S on my trusty nikon F100 film burner and focus faster than a kit lens on my canon 1D or 1DMKII. It's now fair to judge a camera by the kit lens because not all lenses are created equal, nor do they all focus slow on a nikon D80.

I switched to Canon when I went digital, but my Nikon glass was so amazing, I couldn't sell it.

BTW, The plastic under $100 canon 50f1.8 is the best buy for the $ and the same goes for the nikon version. Adding an extension tube(12mm or so) would increase the focus distance for tighter closeups and no image degradation what so ever due to no glass elements in tubes. You will lose infinity focus with a tube though, but for close ups of geckos you don't need infinity.

Marcia,

More info on those lenses and I should be able to give you a definate yes or no as to full compatability or not.I am 99% sure that they will work as long as they are EOS mount(canon AF) and made in the last 5-7 years.
