I am so excited! My female Piper laid two eggs a few days ago, I wasn't expecting it so they were dried up by the time I found them. Tonight I went upstairs and saw that HoneyBoy had Evie by the neck, just holding a little bit of skin. I was like OH GOSH they're gonna mate!!! So I ran and got my camera, came back and got pictures of it all! I'm totally excited to have gotten the chance to see it.

I have a nest box, what I'm wondering now is how long would it be before I should expect eggs? My understanding is they can mate once and lay several clutches using that same sperm... so I'm not quite clear on whether or not she should be producing eggs right away or if it just happens whenever she decides on it lol.

Thanks! Emily

usually about a month but they could come as early as 2 weeks or as long as 6 weeks or so. they can produce fertile eggs for an entire season and possibly more from a single mating. i'd put a laying box in there in a couple weeks and when she starts digging you'll know there will be eggs in a couple days.

congratulations!

Mine tend to lay in roughly two week intervals when the time comes. Good luck on your next clutch. Keep the substrate in the lay box moist but not too wet. Too much moisture will cause the eggs to mold and too little will cause them to dry out. The substrate should be damp but still crumble at a slight touch. If it clumps and stays that way it is too moist and you should ring it out until you can barely squeeze a drop of moisture from it. I hope that helps.
