Cermaic Tile question.

So I purchased 4 18"x18" ceramic tiles today, thinking that a 40G breeder is 36"x18" only to not have thought to exclude the black strip so they are just a little to big to fit inside.

Is there an inexpensive easy way to shave about 1/4" off each side of them?

Also is ceramic a good option or is there a better option to use?

edit: also i got 4 because i have 2 tanks to setup just to avoid answering why i got 4.

Even though ceramic doesn't conduct electricity well, it still has high thermal conductivity, more information can be found here

They wouldn't make ceramic heaters if they didn't conduct thermal energy. I use ceramic tiles and my temps are 90-95

I feel like an idiot... I thought the ceramic was the part of the heater that didn't get hot.
