How often do you open your incubator and check out your eggs. I feel like just leaving them until around the hatch date but was curious if anyone checks the perlite to make sure it's still moist, etc.

I had an incubator with a camcorder in it for awhile... modified fridge, just ran another cord for a florescent light and the camcorder's power and A/V out. Put a small television set next to the thing and could look anytime I was so inclined without opening the door. Just a visual assessment of course, it wasn't a substitute for tactile information about incubation medium moisture... but it was pretty fun.

It was my first clutch of chondro eggs and I didn't want to open the door because I was a bit twitchy about temperature stability. Overly so. Way past what was necessary or reasonable.

With the low cost and small size of web cams these days it is something that can be done for under twenty bucks.

I'm using the think geek mini fridge and a G.E.O. setup so I can see the eggs. I just want to checkout the moisture of the perlite.

I'm probably being over anxious since the eggs look really good and don't have any dents or anything. I also mixed the perlite as everyone has described so there shouldn't be any issues.

i usually leave my eggs alone unless i see denting, molding, or eggs that are past due date. but i don't have holes in my containers so i do vent them once a week. gives me a chance to visually inspect them all. i won't touch the eggs unless its a few days past due, then i will candle just to make sure it's viable.

Seamus, love the camera idea. I could set up something where i could log on from anywhere and check to see if something hatched, lol

I only open mine to add eggs or remove hatchlings and bad eggs. I use the mini frig 5000 and indirectly shine a flashlight on the eggs to monitor them. My LED light in the incubator went out the 2nd day I had it =/. Temps stay within a +-1-2f degrees from the set temp.
