This all depends on how much your cresty eats, and therefore, poops. If you spot clean the poops often your cage will stay cleaner a lot longer. I would say clean the cage items every month to 6 weeks, while doing a full clean and change of substrate every 2 or 3 months.

If the cage starts to smell, it means clean it soon. If you find mold, clean the whole thing immediately.

I wouldn't worry about stressing the cresty too much from cleaning. It will be fine.

Daedric1- great comments. We use bare bottom enclosures and clean closer to every two months or so.
One other factor is how many geckos (and size) in the enclosure. Example- we keep pairs in 20XHs so the 'every 2 months' works for us.

ok cool, i read one place that you should do a full cleaning once a week and that seemed like a little much. i noticed some poo and shed skin in the plant she sleeps in so i cleaned that. but she seems to enjoy pooing on my when i hold it. everytime, she gets into a jumping crouch... and poo :main_thumbsdown:

I have a young one that likes to this that sometimes, lol.

I think I've noticed that they do this more often if you wake them up and begin holding them. If they're awake and they have to poop, they'll usually just do it. But if they get woken up and have to go, they're just going to go...wherever they may be...haha.

i always pick her up after she has been out of her sleeping spot and exploring for a few hours. idk haha, we'll see if she keeps doing it. i would prefer that she doesn't do it, i'll heve to get her gecko diapers.

Depends on the type of cage really. I clean my paper towel cages once weekly, I couldnt image not cleaning it weekly, even babies will poop a pretty good about in their tubs, so beyond 9 days at most...ehhh you really should be cleaning more than that. On a dirt substrate spot cleaning once a week really should be done, and a total substrate change about every 2 months. If you set it up right, a total change will never be needed, but this is if you have it set up as a living viv where everything naturally beaks down, I have 2 tanks like this, except it is for phelsuma, not cresteds.

Otherwise...ehh longer than a week....i dont know about you but I personally wouldnt want to be housed in a container like that, wouldnt expect my geckos too either.
