Concerned about tail tip

One of my geckos has developed a reddish tail tip in the last week. It has gradually darkened and appears to be like a scab now, although there was no bleeding as far as I can tell (no stains on paper towel). I'm treating it with neosporin, but I'm not exactly sure what caused it. He's kept by himself, so the only thing I can think of is a retained shed that I didn't notice, but there was definitely no old shed on the tail when I first noticed this. Here are pictures of the tail.

Any thoughts? Should I be doing anything else for treatment? I've only experienced anything like this once before, and it was definitely a retained shed in that case.

Check your temperatures... it could be a thermal burn. Make sure the warm spot is no hotter than 95 degrees on the surface. If you use tubs with grooves around the inside bottom, the temperatures could be much higher inside the groove where it's closer to the heat source.

It could be from residual unshed skin on the tail tip, or if you have crickets left in the enclosure they can eat at the tail like that.

Just put some antibiotic ointment on the tail tip, and if it's going to come off it will take a week or so.

That kinda reminded me of Lemsip's tail. Maybe you can take a look at my old thread. In short, I noticed very faint bite marks on Lemsip's tail tip one morning, then very quickly within a day or two, the faint bite marks became dried, hardened and formed a scab with no bleeding at all. At first I believe he accidently bit himself while catching prey food, but now, I'm starting to think it might be caused by a thermal burn in the first place, he might be feeling something "not right" there, so he bit it. I had ceramic tiles flooring in their tank, and I can remember a few days prior to what happened, Lemsip pushed out his humid hide; perhaps the heat trapped under the humid hide might have burnt him. Here is my old thread:

I think he should be fine as long as the redness and scab don't spread. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I can rule out thermal burns and insect bites, so I guess he must have nipped it himself last time he was shedding. If anything changes, I'll keep you guys posted.
