That's what you want to happen. The red light means the heating element is on, so in order for your temp to drop, the heat has to be off.

so how do i keep the temperature at a steady like 86 degrees? do i let the incubator go for a while to heat up, without the eggs being in it, then shut it off, which will allow all that heat to just stay in there? or is the light supposed to be on all the time.

No the light just lets you know when the heating elementsd is on. You have to make small adjustments and wait the red light will come on and off on its own. Just keep turning it down until you get the disired temp. You have to give it a little time between each adjustment. Hope this is clear for you.

You really should have had the hova set up way in advance to make sure your temps were correct. You'll have to keep turning the handle and waiting until you get to the right temp, as Thomas said.

If you don't have a proportional thermostat hooked up to it, make sure it's in a room where the temperature is always steady. The one way thermostats that are on the Hovas can only go up. If your room is typically 70, and it's then 71, the incubator will be one degree warmer. It works the same way lower. It can't keep a exactly temp.
