:main_angry: I am so tired of reading about some idiot trying to get rid of or sell their animal because they didn't do the research in the first place, and a year later, they wonder why the iguana doubled in size. They either sell it, let it loose outside, or take it to the shelter....but instead of giving it away to a knowledgeable person for free and doing a home visit, they just run to the county shelter. It amazes me how these people ask for (example) $75 as an adoption fee for a skink....but they do not run a rescue org or a shelter.....Nope....this person is just a soccor mom who bought her spoiled kid a skink at PetCo to shut him up, and 2 weeks later, the kid wants someone else( probably a snake)....so what does this woman do, try and sell the skink for $75 and if no one will pay the "adoption fee", she will take it to the county shelter, as if thats any better. Adoption fee is now code for "SALE" on Craigslist.

For some reason, these TOOLS think that anyone willing to pay $50+ as an "adoption fee", is the best person to care for the animal, when in reality, anyone can pay $50 and get an animal and do what ever they want to it.

The skink lady, will be getting a really great mani/pedi while some other inexperienced person trys to take care of the skink, untill finally this poor animal is moved so much, he becomes too stressed and dies.

I wish I could pull a fight club on all the chain pet stores corporate offices, who are a big reason these animals are cloggin up rescues and shelters......but I digress.

I know what you mean, I frequent craigslist a lot watching for reptiles that need rescuing. It makes me sad. They say no "sales" allowed on craigslist but we all know theres not much difference between "adoption fees" and "sales"
When its on craigslist. I always email people and tell them to charge an adoption fee to assure its going to a good home and then to donate the adoption fee to local shelters who really need the money.

Well I contacted an ad on that list the other day and after talking to me the guy was going to give me the dog out right with a home check, don't assume the poster won't do that, maybe they just don't want every tom, dick and harry thats looking for a free animal contacting them.

I use to rescue animals and find good homes for them. I was not a certified rescue but I always had people dumping unwanted animals on me because they knew I was an animal lover. I would list an animal with an adoption fee to weed out the people that just want it because its free. I would "interview" each person that replied and pick out the person that I thought would be best for that particular animal. I would then tell them there was not really an adoption fee and that I am just happy it is going to a good home.

In your case brandy, you deserve a fee for taking care of so many unwanted animals. Im talking about a totallt different thing. a friend of mine rescues unwanted and badly cared for reptiles, and he usually ends up having to pay a ton of money to get the animal and then he spends a lot of his time rehabilitating, feeding and taming the reptile. He uses his own money to halep these animals and still to this day, hasn't made a penny profit and has all of them. Some of these people who don't know what they are getting into and then neglect the animal because they didn't do their research, and want $50+ to get rid of it....rediculous. I think EVERYONE should do a home visit if they have to give up their pet. Im just mad that a particular person in my area wants $75 for a skink that was poorly taken care of because her young kids are not responsible enough to grasp animals care. I just wish people would stop buying animals when they don't know a damn thing about them.
thanks for letting me blow this steam off guys!

I'm with you on that one. We have people put ads in the paper everyday to get rid of a reptile or amphibian or some sort. One lady wanted $100 for a baby beardie and all the stuff that goes with it. I went to look at it. The baby was so very sick and didn't look like it was going to make it. It was in a 5 gallon cage with one day bulb that stayed on constantly and was being fed only baby food. I don't know all that much about beardies, but I know the basics enough to know that it loked like crap and wasn't being cared for properly. I felt bad, but I could not bring myself to give her that much money for a beardie that was sooo deathly skinny and ready to die looking. It made me very sad to walk out of there, but she refused to go down in price. She said she paid an arm and a leg for it and she was not going to give the animal away for any less. The next day the ad was gone and I assume it either died or some unknowing person bought it. I was very sad, but what do you do?:bigcry:

Yes I agree that someone that is just trying to "get rid" of an animal because they can not take care of it properly should not have that high of an adoption fee. The adopter would be doing both them and the animal a favor by taking it off there hands and that should be payment enough.
