So, my dad bought me a crested for Christmas and I couldn't be happier.
Someone brought him to the pet store and didn't want him anymore, so I got him plus all of his stuff(12x12x18 Exo Terra, 3 plants, bendable Exo vines, coconut husk substrate, water bowl, and a dozen crickets) for 100 bucks.
He's perfectly healthy, and an adult.
Anyways, is the coconut husk okay for substrate? He doesn't really like to stay on the ground much and I feed him in a separate enclosure. All his, nothing else but crickets in it.
If the coconut husk isn't okay, what should I use? I really love the look of natural substrate opposed to the carpet and paper towel route, but whatever is best for Goliath is fine with me.
Pictures soon. :D

i know what you mean about not wanting to go the paper towel route but i really do think it is the best idea. My cresties seem to be very dirty and i cant imagine cleaning other types of substrate so i just go with paper towel. Just be careful with any loose substrate because if you feed crickets they dive bomb those and get a mouth full of whatever they land on.

Oh I know! He leaves little urate trails on everything!!
But like I said, I feed him in a separate 10 gallon with some crickets in it so he doesn't get a mouthful of nasty coconut husk. I just like it because it's nice to look at, but it also holds humidity well.

By the way if anyone was wondering, I do gutload my crickets with the Fluker's cricket quencher and the calcium food.
That's the only brand my local pet store carries in cricket gutloads.
I also dust them lightly with some RepCal Calcium with D3.

Well if you feed him in a seperate tank i see no reason why the coconut husk substrate wouldnt work, and im sure it looks so much better.

The substrate should be fine, just try to spot clean it and pick up and poo and stuff.

When I get the doors to my 18x18x24 Exo terra I'm going to set the whole thing up basically natural with organic soil and plants.

But right now I did have soil and moist moss, but I put paper towel over it to see if my guy is going to the bathroom.

As long as you aren't putting crickets in the tank it will be fine.

Awesome!
Thanks soooo so much.
Is the Exo Terra I have going to be big enough?
He's about 5 1/2 inches right now and seems to have plenty of room.
I'd like to have the same one you have, but I just can't afford it right now.

I think the 12x12x18 might be okay, but if you think he is getting too big for it, up size it, they do a lot of exploring at night time.

Willlllll do.
So, any ideas what he might be? I was thinking just normal.
Most of the Crested's I've seen have been like the one in your picture, Pepper, but he stays pretty dark green or dark brown most of the time.
He doesn't have any spots or anything, either.

I can't tell from those pictures, he could be a bi color, patternless, I'm not sure haha.

I don't even know what mine is ahah, I think mine's just a normal.

Try and get some better pics.

They are cloacal spurs.

I think he's just a normal, but I really am loving that olive green color!

Very nice gecko. ;)

Id really get him a bigger enclosure tho, many people would recommend a 18x18x24 for an adult

Oh! Now I feel like a retard. I had no idea.

Mungall, I agree. And thanks for the kind words! Christmas has me in a bind, but when I save up some money I plan on getting the bigger one.

He's gorgeous. I've never seen one his color. It's so strange.
He stays that olive green color most of the time.

Btw, I've found that an extremely small UTH(came with him) under the moist substrate does wonders for the humidity without making it too warm even on the floor.
The humidity has been staying around 80-90%. Is that much okay?
