I have a 55 gallon long that I was going to put poison dart frogs in but decided to house either crested geckos or leopard geckos in. I already have 2 geckos that I house seperately in 16 qt tubs. I am leaning toward crested geckos for the 55 gallon tank. My question is how many females could I comfortably fit in a 55 long?

I wouldnt have more then 4 females in there to give each female her own ample room.

Do realize that even in a large tank, not all females will get along, and sometimes they get along fine then one day te just simply decide to not like one another any more. Remember reptiles are not social creatures, we just feel they needs friends because we are social by nature (well some of us anyways!).

Do remember to QT any new females you aquire for at least 90 days to insure health before adding them into a colony, and you may want to wait until you have all the females in line that you want, have the QT process out of the way before adding any geckos into the tank to be sure that no female already has an established territory and the others get beat up.

Also be sure to have at least 3 feeding areas to insure all females will have somewhere to eat incase if one is protective over a food dish.

oh yea its definately going to be awhile before I add anything to the tank. I have to get it decorated and planted, putting up vines and hanging dishes inside, etc. I have tubs that each will get housed in until they are ready for the tank. My only issue is, I dont want an adult and I want either 1.3 or 4 females and hatcling are not accurately sexed. I guess I have to roll the dice and hope for females

You honestly dont want to keep a male in with females all year round. In many instances for people the males will not give the females a break and the result is her laying eggs all year round which will wind up really breaking down the female. So if it is your plan, I would consider taking a section of the tank and putting a divider in there to keep the male seperated from the females.

I was thinking of housing just females and adding the male in at certain times throughout the year. Any good crestie breeders come to mind?
