Ok Im guessing this is a stupid question but figured Id ask anyway. I only am going to have 1 gecko. Im thinking about feeding her mealworms and crickets. Im going to buy the worms online. Because they will live long enough for her to eat them when I keep them in the fridge. However is there a way to prevent crickets from breeding ? I mean I could buy like 100 online and store them but Im not looking to have 10000. Just wondering if there is away to keep them in check other than seperating males and females.

They won't breed unless you give them heat and some sort of substrate to lay eggs in. Keep them at room temp and they won't breed.

If I could suggest, buy a small amount of dubias roaches and see if your leopard gecko will like it. They are a lot easier to maintain, they don't smell, they don't jump, and they are very nutritious. They live a long time so you don't have to buy 25 crickets and watch 5 or so die within a week. You'll have to order them online, but you can find some cheap ones and just buy a small amount to try them out first.

Once you've established that your leopard gecko likes them, you'll never go back to crickets. But the key is making sure your leo will like them, because not all leopard geckos go for those roaches. I have 1 that will not touch them, while 4 others will eat them.

The word roach completly sceeves my wife. Not allowed to have roaches. And yes I tried to explain that they are different than the ones she is thinking of. It didnt matter. I believe the word she used was " DIVORCE". But thanks anyway.

Now of course I need to keep them on some sort of substrate right ? Room temperature should be around 65° with no heat. That will work?

Crickets stink. Plus I thinks its completely unfair to you and your animals, let alone your pocketbook for her to pass judgement based on what is probably a set of a couple misconceptions. They can be completely contained, out of sight, out of mind. You're in for a rough ride bro. :) maybe try again but just call them dubias instead of roaches? :)

P.s I hate crickets :)

There are mealworms, superworms and pheonix worms that are all good for your leo. I took mine off of crickets because they stink and you will end up with a lot of dead ones. Mine are happy eating mealworms and pheonix worms with the occasional waxworm as a treat.

Thank you all for the responses after doing some extra research I have decided that reptiworms (aka phoinx worms ) should suit my needs. Still gonna buy about 10 crickets on the weekends just for the pure fun of watching them get eaten. :)

good plan. I buy just enough crickets for my cresteds once a week so I just gutload them and throw them in. I would switch between pheonix worms and mealworms because although pheonix worms are great in calcium and other nutrients they are low in fat. I found that if I feed mine pheonix worms for too long they slow their weight gain. I see that you have a Great Dane. I love Great Danes. I had 2 growing up. Good luck with your leopard gecko :)
