I need to free up some space in my room. I've got three 20 longs and a 10 gallon on stands and tables. I want to build custom cages but I don't know what to use that is safe. Right now I'm using lights because the tables can't handle the heat. I would like to switch over to a uth but then I have the problem of what to use for the cages.

What materials can I use with a uth that won't split from the heat?

If your UTH is getting hot enough to split a table, then I probably wouldn't want it underneath any of my geckos! I don't use any pre-fab UTHs, just heat tape. I've installed it under aquariums on wood shelves and have never had a problem of it affecting the wood.

I have glass tanks on wood cabinets, I don't think the UTH will affect the wood, but I did add a thin layer of cork lining in between (about 5mm thick). It serves as an insulating material, so most of the heat from the UTH will go up to the tank.

I had a heating pad meant for people on top of my chest when I got my first gecko and it end up splitting my chest over time but I think the temps were pushing over 100.

I'll look into that that cork lining as an extra precaution.
