I hope to have some geckos shipped to me one day, but I'm very concerned about them arriving safely. I've had serious problems with getting packages since I've lived in the house I'm in now (over a year).
We're out in the country on four acres. Four of our dogs spend nice-weather days outside if someone's home, and often anywhere from one to four additional dogs who live around the neighborhood will show up to hang out in our yard (whether or not our dogs are outside). Our dogs are kept on our property by an invisible fence (two of them will dig and/or climb their way out of convention fencing in no time, even with supervision).
If I'm expecting a package on a certain day, I keep our dogs inside. However there's been many times when I wasn't sure when a package would arrive, so the dogs were outside when the delivery arrived. For some reason, all the drivers assigned to my rural area are afraid of dogs. Why someone afraid of dogs would be assigned to an area where there are dogs roaming around everywhere, I don't understand... I've explained to several of the drivers that the dogs are friendly and harmless. However, it's been months since we've had a package delivered to our doorstep.
If they can stuff whatever it is into the mailbox, they usually do that. If not, they sometimes leave the package in the driveway (sometimes on top of one of our vehicles, sometimes just on the ground). Sometimes they won't even bother to come up the driveway, and will just leave one of those "delivery attempted" notices in the mailbox - even when my boyfriend and I are home and the dogs are inside. There's even been a few instances where no notice was left, and the only way I found out that a "delivery attempt" was made was from checking the online tracking. Once we were told that a package was not delivered because the driver couldn't find our house (even though she's personally delivered packages before), and another company told us that a package wasn't delivered because our house was vacant!
Long story short, I'm terrified about having geckos shipped here because of all this. I'm sure any live shipping guarantee would be void in any of the previously mentioned cases. None of these delivery mishaps have involved live animals, but I worry that even a package clearly labeled as such wouldn't make a difference. Has anyone else had such awful problems getting packages delivered? Was there anything you could do about it? Do you think there would be a way for me to contact UPS or FedEx and clearly explain that I am expecting live animals on a certain date, and would it make a difference? Or should I just not bother risking it and plan a day where I can stay at my parents' house and get a delivery there instead? If I had the geckos shipped to my parents' house, do you think the breeder would have a problem with the shipping address not matching my billing/verified Paypal address?
