i don't want to start a huge debate, but would dirt or soil be a more suitable substrate than sand? Can they still be impacted from soil? just curious:main_robin:

I think dirt or soil might have harmful stuff in it, so I wouldn't use it personally. I use ceramic tile and papertowels.

ROFL! I love you Marcia.

I think as a whole, soil may hold too much humidity. Also, it being a loose substrate it will pose a threat of impaction. If you are to use a loose substrate I personally would reccomend group limestone, that has very low silica content so it is easy to break down if ingested. Paper towels are always the safest route.

im not quite sure what the whole "bang the head against the wall" comment is supposed to be about. sorry if this was a "dumb" question or that you wasted your time reading my thread. i have read a good deal about leopard gecko's. i am not housing a gecko on soil, i dont even own one as a matter of fact, but i have been reading in the event that i DO get one i am as well prepared as possible. i know most people recomend shelf liner, tiles, reptile carpet, and paper towels, but i was wondering if soil could be used as an alternative that was more pleasing to the eye without comprimising the health of the gecko. maybe this question has been asked on a regular basis, and im sorry if I've been keeping that annoying chain going.

I don't think anyone was trying to be rude, but I would imagine if you have read most leopard gecko care sheets and books it tells what is best to use, ceramic tile, slate, papertowels, shelf liner, reptile carpet. Some people use sand some don't I guess that's your choice.

I use papertowels, and ceramic tiles, I think the tile looks awesome and holds heat pretty darn good.
