It's been 2 weeks since I last posted, and my gecko is doing great :). However, there is one problem that I still have. When I stick my hand in my geckos enclosure, and he is outside of his hide belly warming, he will just sniff my hand, and then reajust his position to face away from it. Why is this?

Don't stress too much. Your gecko will live around 20years, so just work on your "Long-game". Don't make him fear you as a youth.

Leo's are said to be "loners who only tolerate handling", etc etc,. And I can see that with a couple of mine and their "don't touch me" attitudes. :(

However, I think you are making progress but don't rush it. On March 8, you posted that he "sniffs you and then goes into the hide".....this means he's still pretty scared.

Now he sniffs, and then just lays in the open floor. This is a little more trusting. :)

Each Leo is different so you have to judge your Leo's reaction and decide if you are moving too swiftly. Just keep putting your hand ON THE FLOOR (for steadiness) to get sniffed. Maybe 2x/week you can pick him up and "treadmill" from hand to hand SLOWLY and Gently for about 2 minutes.

Eventually, maybe he will soften up to you. I have a blizzard that was very skittish. Now he stares at me from the tank until I come pick him up. Check out the 2 videos in the link below:

^^^"This is not typical of all Leo's. Your results will vary." :) Now he clings desperately to my fingers ("like a booger I can't shake off") when I try to put him back. :D

Oh..... twice a week? I handle him every day for 10 minutes plus with no problems! No biting no squirming and no tail dropping. It's just that, he doesn't necessarily like to be handled, and he doesn't necessarily like for my hand to be in the cage. He's not scared he's just disinterested (as the post name suggests ;) )

There is some cheesy saying about "Distance makes the heart grow fonder"..... the moral is that "They don't realize how much they want to be with you until you aren't there". Or in some human relationships: "I love you more when I don't have to see you all the time because you get on my nerves."

Some human couples are perfect together when they are dating. But as soon as they move in, they break up 2 weeks later because they want some "room to breathe."

too much handling will stress a Leo. It's good that he isn't scared of you, but don't force the contact. If he doesn't come to you, just ease away and hope that he will come around one day.

Most reps don't really enjoy human contact but tolerate it. So don't expect leos to jump into your hands or wag there tails when you come home. I it is not running from you when your hand is in there that is sometimes as good as it gets with most reptiles.
