hey... :main_robin:

I have two females that are a year old housed together, they have been together since they were 5 months.

They are just my pets, not breeders. I've noticed something bizarre lately...

it looks like one of them is "chewing" on the paper towel substrate? in several locations?
or maybe one is biting the other one when i'm not around? and they get some of the paper towel too?

I'm worried... I don't see any signs of bullying. :argue:

The only unusual thing i've seen is one of the girls has been sleeping outside of the hide for, well, at least 2 weeks. she rarely goes into the warm hide, she just sleeps right outside of it for what i've seen. peculiar i know...

they're eating great, and their temp is good...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to look for signs of bullying. Do any of your geckos have bite marks on their heads, sides or tail? Are you sure you have two females? Is one of your females losing weight? By chance, do you have a small dish with calcium inside their cage? I wonder if one of your geckos feels it needs extra calcium so she takes to chomping on the paper towels.

Bullying will be my first choice. Some geckos can get along for a long time until they're adults. How big is your tank?

I don't know about the rest, but one of my females sleeps outside her hides very often too. She is housed alone, eating and doing well. She just started doing it one day, for no particular reason. If you have several hides (so that one gecko can retreat to another hide if she is thrown out from the one where the other gecko wants to be), then I wouldn't take this as a sign of bullying, because she would rather hide from the attacker than just stand outside.

Are you sure that one of them isn't digging at the paper towels looking for a place to lay eggs. They don't need a male to lay , though the eggs will not be viable.

hey guys, thanks for your replies.

so... paul, thats a good point. I'll check one of my girls today to see if she is producing eggs. She is a virgin thought, but I know they can still lay. She weighed in at 65 grams last week, so maybe i'll weight her again and see...

superworms, no I don't have any at all. I just use mealworms, and they don't escape, at least from what i've seen.

also, these "chew marks" are only around the hide areas, or inside in the hide areas.

so I wonder if one of my females is just being silly and trying to dig. haha.
