Dominant females?

I keep all my females together in one large enclosure (6). In the past they have all got along perfectly. I just took my largest out and put her with one of my males. Since then I've noticed little squabbles among the other females. Could it be they are vying for "head female"? Has anyone else seen anything like this?

I've had this happen when I take a male out of a group for his visits with a snigle female. The females that get left behind tend to get a little moody with each other.

Yea....I could just be seeing things (I tend to over analyze), but I think "moody" describes my breeder females also. In a way, it only makes sense that when housed together they should try to carve out their own little spheres of influence. Even fish do this.

Just curious, what size is the enclosure that you keep all your females together? The reason I'm asking is, I might want to put my 4 females together once the young ones get older and I wanted to know what size would be good if I were to do that. Is there a general rule, like 10 gallons per gecko? My two adult females already share a 20 long, and my juvie and sub-adult have their own enclosures.

For single geckos the general rule is about 10 to 15 gallons. IMO this changes a little when you have more than one. I keep all my 6 breeder females in a 40 gallon tank. I have a lot of hides, and everyone seems really happy. I think 4 geckos in a 20 gallon would be too tight. You would probably want a 30 gallon at least.

Thanks. I thought that 4 in a 20 gallon would be pushing it. So I'll keep my eyes open for a 30 or 40 gallon. :main_thumbsup:
