Douglas Fir Bark as substrate?

I have some the pet store gave me when I bought my corn snake, and I don't use it for him.
Would it be okay for a crestie?
I know there's a risk of suffocation and impaction, but I probably won't feed a lot of crickets or anything that can crawl out of the bowl.
