So I have a starter colony of about 5 males and 20ish females and a bunch of nymphs.... But they're gross... I'm having a hard time getting used to them... How do people even touch/ grow thousands of them without any issues? (by issues, I mean realizing you have a ROACH colony and not wanting to kill them)

Idk I may just be a wimp... But it's soooooo gross... IMO

You get used to them after awhile.. I was grossed out by them for the first month, then after that they became my favorite feeders to use.

They're really not that bad, especially when compaired to crickets. They're quieter, they're cleaner, they don't smell as bad and they're just over all a whole lot nicer then crickets. Also remember that these roaches are are a completely different species then the common pest varieties.

I am a bit creeped out by them myself. I still have only big nymphs, no adults, but I forced myself to hold one at every stage...They are now thumb-sized and I have no problems touching one at a time. Untill they put their head down and look like they are nibbling on my skin that is =X

I totally agree with the original poster. Touching them still bothers me and I've had them for the past 4 months. I do enjoy keeping them though. I really like the idea that I'm raising the food that my geckos are getting and I know that they are getting the very best they can.

I also have a mealworm colony and could touch or deal with them at first. It's been over a year and I don't really care any more. I don't know if I'll get to that point with the roaches, only time will tell.

Why not use tongs? Dubia are my favorite feeder, hands down. They don't smell, the colony produces live babies, plus they have great nutritional value.

from time to time, i kind of forget that they are my feeders. I have a clear bin so i can see them eat and stuff. After a couple months of this, i started liking these guys. I consider them my pet too.

I have have my first dubia colony for about a year and a half now. started with 5 males 25 females realized i needed way more so ordered more 20 males 60 females 120 mixed nypmths i felt that it would be more of a colony if i had some in every stage. within 10 months at 90 degree temps and feeding 2 bowls of food a day with fruits and veggies i was well over a thousand dubia. They creeped me out and scared my wife. Hands down they are a great feeder but strange to start handling. I started handling the babies and worked my way up. i used the tongs at the beginning but that takes way to long for me to get all the nymphs i need. I just use my hands its a lot faster. Now i have 2 colonies going with approx 3k dubia from small to adults. my son also helps with the animals he doesnt like to touch them directly so he uses disposable plastic gloves with no powder coasting. so that is a great way to start off handling them.
