Dubias (No intention of breeding)

Hey guys,

So I'm planning on going with dubia roach feeders instead of nasty crickets for my little leo. He's about 5 inches (a little under 2 months) so I was hoping someone could shed some light on this topic. I've done quite a bit of searching through the forums but most of the posts seem to relate to breeding, which I am not interested in at this time (though it's ok if they do).

First, what would be the right size? Most of the breeder site's I've seen either sell them too small (1/4) or too big (7/8).

Second, what are some good roach sellers? I know of the roach guy but he only sells a variety pack of 1/2 or small to sub adults. Seems like this is mostly for breeding.

Third, what is a good setup and location to keep these things if I don't tend on breeding? I live in a pretty small condo with a garage so I was wondering if I could keep them in the garage or above the washer/dryer in some cabinets; however, the cabinets are not too tall so I would need a flatter container. Also, I'm in Southern California.

Thanks!

You can keep them in any type of plastic container. If your not breeding them then don't worry about keep them on heat. you will need to get some egg crate, you can visit a local deli or bakery and try to take their used ones off their hands. As for size it depends on your leo's head size, I feed my hatchlings small to medium. freshly hatched dubia are just not worth it but smalls tend to be ok! Its always safer to go too small as you can just feed the dubia letting them get a little bigger while you feed a different feeder.

As for where to buy Roachguy is good place or even on here you can find ppl who maybe willing to ship out a batch including myself. The nice thing about working with an individual is that if you are looking for a specific size or quantity you could ask for that instead of doing the package deals where you may very well get a variety of sizes.

Hope this helps! How many leo's are you feeding just one? If so PM me I could put together a shippment of smalls for ya.

Thanks! I ended up grabbing a 10 gal tub on sale at Walmart and cut out a 4x5 hole and hot glued a screen there. Found a good spot for them too where the tub fit so that's good! My leo hasn't arrived yet though; he's coming Wednesday. Hopefully he likes the dubias because he's been on nothing but crickets from the breeder.

I'll PM you about the offer :)

Dubias can and will breed without heat! My heating pad broke about six months ago and we still have baby roaches all over the place! I feed the adults to my Pogonas and the smaller ones to the geckos.
