My leo doesnt seem to like the calcium powder that i coat the feeders in. Im not really sure if im supposed to keep trying to put the powder on them or just give up on it. Please help, im worrying about the little guy.

Thanks!

Hi Kale,
what makes you think he does not like the Ca powder? How does he react to it? Did you try to give him the feeders without the Ca? Did he take them more willingly? If you got your leo from a breeder, you may consider contacting them and ask what they used, especially if you just got your leo, it might make things easier for him if he finds the used smell on his feeders. Are you sure you are not using to much of the Ca powder when dusting? I would try and find out if he is eating your feeders without the Ca, then I would start to introduce the Ca gradual, maybe with 1-2 dusted feedings per week and see how it goes.

I do not dust my feeders. The dust kills/suffocates mealies too. It is best to place a dish of calcium/vits in the enclosure. The leos know when they need them and lick it up as they wish. No need to dust feeders. Trust me on this.

i've noticed with my leo that he's more eager to eat crickets dusted with vitamins than the calcium. I do have a dish of calcium in the tank at all times, but i have no clue if he licks it up or now cuz i'm not home during the day, plus he's shy. idk. i think its okay to just leave bowls of vit/cal in the tank for them to lick as they please. i just like dusting feeders...its fun to put crickets in a ziploc bag and shake the heck outta them :) its stress relief lol

well i dropped a waxworm into some powder that i had in my tank by accident and my leo went to eat smell him and turned away. he loves waxworms. and i have stopped dusting the crickets and stuff but he doesnt seem to have much of an appetite... i dont know how to get him to eat more, his tail is getting skinner and im not real sure how to fatten it up. im maybe gonna try that slurry stuff, see if thatll work.
also, i didnt get him from a breeder.... i got him from the pet store =/
i cant afford one from a breeder, it costs too much to ship them.

Two words...try butterworms. They go nuts over them and they are the highest in calcium of any feeder and low in fat, despite what some say.

You will likely never find butterworms in stores. You'll need to order them online. I use Mulberry Farms but there are a few others that have them, and they are all the same, irradiated from S America. They are awesome! My geckos go crazy over them and they are super high in calcium and low in fat. I generally feed 2 worms per feeding, that's all you should need them to eat. Keep them in the fridge and they are good from 2-4 months...add in a carrot and they actually eat this in the cold fridge and stay nice and plump. Cool worms!! Easy to handle and they do not bite.
