I've had repti-carpet for a while and its getting expensive to keep switching it out every month or two (i spot clean daily but washing it does not work well - it gets messed up after it dries), and I don't like the paper towel look, and I know sand is bad. Is Eco Earth OK (packed down) to use as my substrate?

I have always been told and read that anything that is loose as a substrate can be dangerous. I just use ceramic tile, they come in lots of colors and texture... I used to use fine sand, it looked nice and all, and was probably soft for my leo, but I had an issue with impaction and decided not to take a risk anymore. My friend has a African fat tail they keep on wood chips, big and small, and they have never had a problem.... So it depends on if you want to take the risk or not.

I've used Coconut fibre as substrate for over a year now and my geckos have never had any problems with it. Its easy to clean up, and you only have to change it every couple of months to keep it fresh. Its digestible if it is consumed too!

I use it in my laying containers and every now and then Ill see a clump in their poo, so I guess it is fine. I have not lost a gecko yet.
