I believe Marcia posted something a while back about having this done with one of hers and they were even able to keep her breedable. Macia is on bed rest recovering from surgery but maybe if you shot her a PM she may have some more info for you when she gets back on.

In 14 years of breeding leopard geckos, I have had 8 cases of egg-binding (dystocia) in which 6 required surgical intervention. Half of them survived well, but it was not without problems. After the surgery, they all went back on food and started gaining weight. When it came time for them to shed, ALL of them pulled out their sutures which caused one of them to have her entrails fall out. She passed away after the second surgery to replace her organs. After that, I watched very closely for shed time and trimmed the skin around the incision with cuticle scissors. They still wanted to pull out those stiches.

A couple of them that required surgery, once the vet got them open there was too much infection from calicified eggs and they had to be euthanized. I also had one female actually have her eggs herniate through the abdominal wall which killed her, and another tried to pass a calcified egg and she prolapsed her oviduct, and she bled to death.

I have also had success with getting a couple of females to lay with injections of Oxytocin preceeded by an injection of calcium. The vet gave the first injections, and I gave a second round a few days later. I once also had to asparate eggs with a hypodermic needle which removed about 1cc of yolk allowing the egg to pass. This is tricky, as any leakage of yolk in the abdomen can cause infection.

ALL of the females I have had this problem with were proven breeders, and in every case the eggs were infertile. Here are some of the reasons why females become egg-bound:

- the female is too small/young to lay eggs
- the eggs are too big to pass (typical of infertiles)
- lack of an appropriate place for the female to lay her eggs
- undue stress from other geckos when housed in groups
- calcium deficiency
- uterine (oviduct) inertia, or lack of ability for the oviducts to contract to push the eggs out
- follicular stasis, where the female's body could not reabsorb all of the follicles/eggs

If your female does not lay her second egg within 3-4 days, I would recommend trying an injection of calcium, followed by an injection of Oxytocin. For the correct doses, PM me and I will give you my vet's phone number so your vet can call him.

can you not just put a injection needle in the egg and suck the jolk out ? since you can easely see where the eggs are ( wel mostly )
after sucking the egg empty the body will dispose of the egg shel wich is calcium.. ?

i have seen this methot used on several egg bound lizzards and it worked fine does annyone know if it works with leo's aswel ?

i have not had anny eggbound leos as of yet but it could always happen.

Marcia addressed this a little bit.

well after a second trip to the vet for another injection she finally passed the last egg on Saturday. thanks Marcia for suggesting the calcium shot i think that did the trick with the oxy shot. so how long should eggs go before you decide to go for the surgery? she went 10 weeks this time. the last set of eggs she went 6 weeks. each clutch she went a week longer each time. i have gotten 4 clutches including this last one.
