I found another egg today and it had a soft shell. It was also the only egg of the clutch and it's NOT the mother's first clutch. Was the egg just very fresh or is there something wrong with it or the mother?

It could be:

1. - the egg was newly laid and not firmed up
2. - the mother needs more calcium for her eggs to develop thicker shells
3. - the egg is not fertile

They are very soft when first laid.

I had a girl lay 'water balloons' her first 2 clutches this year (they were infertile and never hardened up). I ended up re-breeding her with the male, since I figured after 4 infertile eggs something may have not taken correctly with the first breeding. This last clutch (#3) hardened up like normal and both actually candled fertile the other night. So, in the case that it's infertile, you might want to try rebreeding if she'll allow it.
