Hi all,
I have recently set up my viv with decent sucess. standard 10L, heat mat, 1 store bought hide, 2 make shift opaque butter pot hides, water shallow dish, calcium and mealworm dish, thermostat linked to the heat mat and a 2 separate thermometers with probes, one under warm hide (28-31 degree) and one around about 1inch off the ground near the cool hide which sits at room temp about 22-24ish.
I got my first leopard 2 days ago, i had the store bought hide in the cool side, make shift butter pot in the warm side. For yesterday and part of today he only stayed in the cool side hide (which was reading about 25-26C), so I though well maybe its too hot for him in the warm side even though the probe shuts off any higher than 31 and the thermo probe is showing me correct heat aswell. So i lowered the temperature to about 24-28, he didnt move to the warm side. So I set everything back to original settings maybe just because hes scared and the store bought hide is a little more "cosier" or familiar (being bought from pet store)
Slightly concerned (although not massively as he has just been moved out his comfy chamber in pet store into my house and into a new space, and reading about how hardy these critters are) but not majorly I pop down earlier to grab some crickets since they had none in stock when i took him home only medium sized mealworms (last dregs of the mealworms from store). On returning I remove his cold hide and dump 3-6 3rd brown crickets (nice and tiny for him) and try to observe him see if he is active and fairing well as I couldnt tell if he was eating those free mealworms for the past day. He starts hunting which made me quite happy, he possibly ate one, then hunted another two but decided not to eat them which leads me to believe he wasnt hungry, disinterested he kinda wandered around. At this point I decide to quickly alter his viv, putting the store bought hide into the warm side. pack everything up, collect remaining crickets and leave him alone at this point he runs to his store bought hide in the warm side.
Am I to worry much about him? If i have the correct temps, should I worry much about where he spends his time? Is he preferencing a more familiar type of hide and will overheat himself by wanting to stay in there?
