Emergency Housing

Hey folks,

I don't post here often, but I just wanted to share a tidbit of information, especially for my fellow Southern Californians who might be in any fire prone areas.

Santa Barbara (where I live) made national news because of the horrendous fire that started on Tuesday. I remember seeing just a little plume of smoke on the way home from work that afternoon, and then things just exploded over the next few days. We got a evacuation warning Wednesday night, and I put my 10 gallon tank in the car.

Thursday night, the firestorm started, and it was pretty nasty. We were evacuated at 10:30 that night, but we had the car packed and ready to go. I was able to grab 'Dony, and put him in his little critter keeper, and then we were out of there.

I learned a lot from that. Namely, it's so important to have an emergency cage or something on hand that doesn't take up a lot of room and is fairly lightweight. I could not have been able to take his Visionarium with us. Too heavy, too long and too bulky. His old 10 gallon tank was pretty good, especially since it still had a heat mat. I didn't have a thermostat, and I learned a lot from that too. We stayed at my dad's office out at UCSB, and my gecko was just fine with the heat mat plugged in and going. Of course, next time, I think I'll have an extra thermostat and thermometers packed up and ready, but my leo was fine without it on a short term basis.

I'm definitely going to start putting together an emergency kit for my gecko in terms of the things he'd need if we ever had to evacuate from a fire again. I'd make sure he had a big enough tank, but not one that would take up a lot of room (I'm thinking plastic would be better than glass in this case, because it's lighter) and he'd have everything he'd need for a few days.

Hope my experience helps a little.

50+ geckos? you send a friend a rack for emergencies and keep a lotta heat packs and deli cups on hand.
and then you have them hook it up while your on the way.

What I have for my guys is the Lee's Herp Haven Breeder box (large) which you can get a lot of times at herp shows and at pet-co. Make sure you're ordering the largest size one, though, especially with multiple geckos. The largest is roughly the size of a ten gallong tank (a bit smaller) and I use it for semi-long-term housing for one gecko. But the BEST part is that it comes with a divider. Potentially you can fit 3 geckos in one cage (if you have an extra divider). There's not much room in there, but for transport it rocks! I have 4 now, so with 8 geckos I can either have them all separated to move/live temporarily, or have my male in one of the smaller plastic terrariums (I think one might be a Lee's size medium) and then 1-2 girls in the rest of them. I really wish they sold extra dividers... I mean, they probably do, but I haven't contacted the company to ask yet. Also I was thinking about using the 2lb strawberry containers- they seem like they might be a neat gecko travel (like to the vet) container, though the escape-proof worthiness of them I question...

But yes, you should ALWAYS have an emergency and evacuation plan for all your animals, no matter where you live and no matter how many you have.
