i think my gecko is dying!!! his guts are hanging out. What to do. Help!

Called vet he said it would cost $400.00 if I come in to treat him and I have to travel 50 miles since no vets in my area specialize in geckos. I just got laid off and as it is now am going to lose my house so I can't begin to afford this.. :( :( :(

what can I do!!

here's a picture

I have heard a mild sugar water mixture sometimes help. All you can do is keep it moist and hope for the best in all reality. If the $400.00 isn't an option then the freezer is the other option.

Try soaking in a sugar water solution. I read it online; it's supposed to help the prolapse retract. They sometimes do retract by themselves, and I hope your gecko's does. Don't try to push it back in yourself because that can cause damage. I read it's not usually life threatening, and the worse thing that could happen is it drying up. Good luck though :)

I have him sitting in a jar of water now put a little bit of sugar in the water... water comes up to about his belly (about half an inch). How long should I leave him in there? I don't want him to drown or anything overnight

Your gecko has a hemipenal prolapse. He is not dying. I can also see a sperm plug (the yellowish hard thing.) The sperm plug needs to be removed quickly- and may have been the reason for the prolapse. Also, it can cause an infection. Because his intestine's are not coming out I would call the vet again and tell him he has a hemipenal prolapse- the cost might be much cheaper. I would also call around to different vets in your area. If you don't mind me asking, what state do you live in? They're many websites that have list of vets that you might not have heard about. Google it.

If you REALLY can't find any vet or afford them you can try to remove the plug yourself. Soak him in warm water bath (always supervise when the gecko is taking the bath, make sure the water is not too deep) and get a pair of tweezers. SLOWLY pull the plug out. if any bleeding occurs or if you can not easily pull it out stop. soak and repeat later. After you get the plug out soak in warm sugar water baths and apply a lubricant like plain K&Y jelly. keep him in a cage with moist paper towels as a substrate... and hopefully they will go back in themselves.

Well I ended up taking him out of the water before I want to bed and put some wet paper towels in his cage in his rock hiding spot. He's still alive but I can't see to well into his cage because there's condensation all over the glass. Will keep you guys updated on progress.

For a leopard gecko there shouldn't be that much humidity in his tank. has the prolapsed hemipenes retracted at all? Did you get the sperm plug off?

OK. This is not good. Think of yourself as a doctor in an emergency room. You're all he's got. The comfort of his surroundings is important. He needs warmth. Glass is cold. Use a small plastic container for his bath. GeckoGal described the procedure above. If you cannot do this, please get him to someone who can, before his condition worsens.

The hemipenes will not correct themselves without the plug removed, or if they do it will be stuck. NOT a good thing! Please read my post and remove ASAP. If the hemipenes are exposed too long the tissue will die, and the risk of infection is very high!

Hey there, looks like a prolapse. This is not that uncommon in male leopard geckos. The best thing to do is soak it in some warm water for a few hours, then put him on moist paper towel, this is to prevent infection from happening. Most of the time the male will reverse the prolapse. I wouldn't suggest breeding him for a little while.
Hope this helps!

take care

Oh he's a virgin so no worries about breeding.

It appears to have retracted a little bit but it's more of a red color now than pink color. Been putting him on warm moist paper towels. Put some neosporin on it too.

Sperm plug doesn't appear to be there anymore, I think he must have removed it himself! Maybe that's why he kept biting it?

Great Pic btw! Agreed on the above prolapse with plug and that is what he was trying to pull out. The tissue is red now probably due to irritation from the outside world...keep the sugar baths coming Nice warm sugar water 20-30 mins not hours. and the moist paper towel in the tank. And really the neosporin isn't a bad Idea...would help lubricate it and help with infection risk!!! Post another pic if you can!

Good luck..don't panic! ( I know its hard!!)

I might be a bit late to reply; but you need to use very dense saturated sugar water or you can apply preparation-H. This will shrink the swelling and hopefully the hemepene will retract.
