A few years ago, I bought a male leopard gecko from the reptile store in downtown Hamilton, Ontario. He was said to be about three or four years old. Recently he has become very lethargic, sleeping all day and through most of the night, not moving a lot, and seeming to have trouble shedding. I have heard that this can be a sign of illness. What should I do about this?
About your leo:
- Male
- 5 years old
- I have owned him for 2 years
- Acquired from pet store
A) Health/History
- How often do you handle your leo
- Is your leo acting any different today? If so how does he/she normally act which differs from now.
- Has he/she had any problems in the past, if so please describe.
B) Fecals
- They do look normal
- I do not know the last time he passed feces, there are only a few old ones in the vivarium which leads me to fear intestinal impaction
C) Problem
- Extremely lethargic, does not move much, shallow breathing, sleeps excessively, only responds if actually touched. Has been going on for a few weeks.
Housing:
A) Enclosure
- 24 x 18 x 18
- Glass with metal ventilation on the top half
- Ground walnut substrate
- Three hides, underneath a piece of cork, behind a desert plant, and behind a rock pile
B) Heating
- Infrared heat lamp
- Cage temps (High 20s hot side, medium/low 20s cool side, variable on both sides)
- A piece of cork to hide under and some shade behind the rocks
- Thermometer
- Infrared heat lamp
C) Cage mates
- Solitary
Describe Diet:
A) Typical diet
- Crickets, usually 6-10 at a time
- They have the run of the viv
B) Supplements (describe how often)
- ExoTerra Calcium D3
I know this is frustratingly little to go on, but he just doesn't seem right. It has been happening for a few weeks and now seems to be getting worse.
