expired calcium question.

My stepbrother use to work at a pet store and acquired a large tub of rep cal calcium with vit d3. This is the only brand calcium sup i have ever used. Rather than going to the store and spending 10 bucks, i borrowed some from him to fill my container. The expiration date has passed on the large tub.

Will this effect my lizards? The large tub is airtight so i wonder if this makes any difference??? I have been using it for a month or so and i just came across someones thread that doesn't seem to think it is good for them. I think it will not make a difference; however i would like some other opinions on the subject. Thanks.

It will detoriate and lose its potency. Depending how long past the experation date will determine how good it still is.

Think about it like this...it has an expiration date for a reason and therefore I would not push it. I am sure research has been done on it and that is how they come up with the expiration date. Just a thought...

well for the most part i agree, however almost everything has an expiration date whether it needs one or not. And many things are good way past expiration. My g/f is fanatical when it comes to the expiration date on say food. She tries to throw stuff away when it is still good just b/c the exp date is here or has past, but certain items are always good past the exp. date.

I do not understand how this stuff would be able to breakdown or go bad. I mean it is a powder.

The tub that the calcium came in is air tight, so i wonder if this makes a difference. I still am concerned, i will more than likely go get some that is not expired soon, but i have not seen any ill effects of using this stuff thus far.

My milf stays fresh months after the expiration. I drink it all the time.:main_laugh:


I would say anything more than 2 months, it is not worth using.

I agree with you guys. I do not mean to sound like i am arguing rather just trying to bring up other question about it.

I have a feeling that it is planned *obsoletion that is the culprit to this whole discussion so people will spend more money on a product that they already have if it is said that it is no longer good. hence the expiration date

Most products stay fresher that what their expiration date says, but how much longer is unknown for supplements. They can only guarantee the concentrations and percentages will be what the label says they are until the expiration date... after that, they will begin to degrade.

IMHO only calcium with d3 can expire. After in exeration date no more d3 in it but instead 100% calcium. I have one d3 from 06. I use it for pure calcium, and keep my d3 one fresh. My vet and I had a conversation about this in December he told me that he wasn't sure but he thinks that calcium is always pure, can't expire the stuff added can but not the pure stuff.

i have pure calcium and it doesnt have an expiration date.. als i have some multivitamins without 1. Do they ever expire then?

I put all my Calcium d3 containers in the freezer, it's supose to stay fresher longer when you do that.

Supplements:
Please note that certain vitamins decompose when exposed to light or moisture. Most commercial supplements actually only have a shelf life of a couple of months, after it was manufactured, so its important to read your labels carefully!
Store your commercial supplements in a cool, dark place.
Never use a supplement that does not have an expiration date on the label.
Never use an expired supplement.
Usually its best to buy smaller amounts of a given supplement.
Always seal the supplement container tightly after each use.
