eye problems! :(

I have two leopard geckos who live in separate tanks beside one and other. A while back, we noticed that one of the geckos had what looked like skin along the top of his eyeball, and also that the eye had gone very white, and he always keeps it closed. Last night I was very upset to discover that this had happened to the other gecko. Could anyone give me some advice? We plan to find a vet but that isn't easy where we live, so does anyone have any advice for in the meantime? Thanks :/

Sounds too me like they had problems shedding and got some skin stuck in and around there eyes. There are methods to get it out, but I can't give you that advice since I havent had to do that yet.

They need to see a vet. The closest herp vet to me is 50 miles away in Gladstone, but I will happily make the drive to be sure Ozy is getting the care she needs. DO NOT attempt to remove shed from in or around the eyes yourself. You need to take them to the vet ASAP and have their eyes looked at. If you mess with the eyes yourself, they will more likely than not develop an eye infection and these are notoriously hard to treat and most of the time leos never fully recover.

You could try to put several droppings of saline eye wash in the closed eyes until you get the geckos to see the vet.

Do they have humid hides that are kept moist at all times? It does sound like they have stuck shed (though we can't really know without pics). You should definitely see a vet immediately. If you go to Google and type in "herp vet search," it looks like there are a bunch of websites on which you can search for vets in your area.

Better to get advice form a vet. If you google they’ll be different types of advice. Who knows what’s best?

I have personally dealt with this problem with a couple of my leos and my vet recommended buying nighttime eye lubricant- for humans- and put one drop in each affected eye twice a day. The gel needs to be mostly mineral oil. It will break the white stuff down into more of a goo that they can get out of their eyes.

Out of curiosity, do you give your feeders carrots or other vitamin A nutrient foods? I also noticed that the milky white in the eye is caused by a slight vitamin A deficiency.

Hope this helps.
