i just read on another forum that a fatty should be over two years old before being bred.

that doesnt sound right to me. i thought it was about a year. how old are your fattys before you breed em?

I wait about 2 years. Honestly, 1.5 is probably adequate. The reason for the wait IMO is to get the female as big as possible with a large amount of reserves.

That's just what I do.

What age should the male be at. My male is about 30 grams and 7 months old. My female is well over 2 and 55 grams

I'm wondering that too! Everyone always speaks of the female being a minimum of 40g, but male? I dont think its an issue of size as with female but for sure sexual maturity. My 7 month old male proved he knows what to do with his women, but I'm wondering if he's actually fertile already...

I only have 1 female fat tail and I just got her not long ago. I have no clue on her age but I am not going to try breeding her for like a year anyways. I don't even have a male yet so I am in no rush.

So I have to admit I don't have a scale. What I do is wait until the growth has stopped and the tail is fat. The reason being is the females I have really go into overdrive with breeding. They will loose weight. One of them I worry about because she'll bang out 12 eggs a season. I just go by general body shape/condition because I deal with a lot of geckos where there really isn't a accepted X weight to breed at.

I have to admit though I'm not in a hurry to breed because last time I did I got stuck with A LOT of babies. It seemed no one wanted normal Fat tails even at wholesale prices except wholesalers. So I haven't bred them for a while.

did you try some local petstores? i have one by my house that told me they would buy any fat tails i brought em.

i dont have a scale either, but i just brought the temp up in my fattys cages and have given them all 1 pinky each (of course with tons of crickets). i plan on giving them all 1 more, then im gonna introduce the male.

i have 2 females, the youngest is a year and a half, but she is bigger than the other wich im guessing is about 2.5 years, so i think she will be fine.

also, gecko, if you dont mind, how do you take care of your eggs and incubation?

I like to wait until females are 50grams. So I usually breed at 18months old. Males that are in the middle or upper 40gram range are when I start breeding them, and that is usually 1 year of age. If your female gets 50grams in a year there shouldn't be a problem breeding them there first year.

I keep them between 82-86 usually. I've incubated on more then a few mediums and they all seem to work. The only problem I ran into was when the medium was a little too wet.

Just a warning though, I've alway had to give mine a cooling period to get reliable breeding beyond the first year. Some people say they don't, but mine simply won't lay without one.
