i know that gut loading mealies with fruits and vegetables is the best way to do it, but is it possible/beneficial to gut load them with cricket food? it is hard for me to get fresh fruits and vegetables since i am away from home

I keep my mealies in cricket food. I think you'd be able to use a bit of damp paper towel to provide moisture. Be sure to watch out for mold from the cricket food getting too wet though. It only takes a very small amount of veggie. If you could get your hands on a potato & slice off a piece, keeping the rest in the fridge til you need it.

We just keep ours in Wheat Flour, Wheat Germ, Oats, Fish Flakes and ground them all up together into a powder. Once every 3-4 days we toss in some slices of potatoes, carrots or lettuce leafs and remove the old slices.

fruits and veges are good for moisture but for gutload I always used 10 grain cereal or progeckos gutload. Then added a few thin carrot, apple or potatoe slices for moisture once a day.

Commercial livestock feeds from a feed store-FAR less expensive than commercial cricket diets and every bit as nutritious. We use Sow mash but chicken laying mash is just as good.
