Feeding Mealworms

I am planning on starting a mealworm colony here shortly, and was wondering what works best as a bedding/food source. I was thinking chicken feed, as layer mash is high in protein and calcium and is cheap and easy to get. Will this work? I'd prefer not use whole oats as it can't be sifted.

Do the worms/beetles need anything other than the bedding? Vegetables or anything?

Thanks!

Chicken feed, wheat bran, and oats are some of the easy choices that I can think of. Just make sure that the.feed is made of natural ingredients, and isn't medicated. And yes, the worms and beetles will need a moisture source. You should use high nutrition vegetables such as kale, carrots, Apple's, etc.. avoid lettuce and potatoes, as those have very little amounts of nutrition in them. I hope this helps!
