Feeding methods?

I am trying to figure out a way to feed my gecko without having to fish out the roaches from under the papertowel/carpet (I know, I need tile), is it possible to place the leo in a feeding box with the roaches and then replace her into her tank when she is done, or is this not advisable?

Your leo may not want to eat if you have just picked him up and moved him, but the only way to know is to try.

If you feed your Leo off of forceps, roaches getting away will be a non issue.

You can also get a ceramic bowl that the roaches can't climb out of and try using it as a feeding dish.

I think I have super dubias because they climbed out of the dish much to my surprise. I think bits of the supplement give them juuuust enough grab to get up the side of the bowl. I might go look for a taller one, but forceps! Ah ha! Now, is there a method to catching the things in the forceps?

I'm assuming this is what you use? Can the leo get in there easily? I'm assuming these are both stupid questions, but I just want to make sure!

No matter, I went ahead and just ordered one, it looks like the curved top will definitely keep the buggies from climbing out.

I had the same issue when i first started feeding my geckos dubia. I did try to feed them in a feed box but that didnt work. only 1 gecko out of the entire group wanted to eat. Since i changed my geckos over to paper towel i had the same concern that the dubia just rub under the paper towel. To my surprise when the lights go out the dubia come out to play the geckos get their hunt on.
So i dont worry about them hiding under the paper much. Most of the time the dubia run into the geckos cave to hide and have shelter and the geckos pick them off in there. :main_laugh:

I use this, works great so far. Although I'm still only feeding medium dubias roaches, so not sure if those are escape free for large ones.

Any tipping issues with that one?

I have my med-large Dubia's in a small glass bowl but they still get out sometimes.....I also have background that the roaches can hide behind so I keep mine in a feeder dish but need something better.....

No tipping issues yet, but my oldest leo is only 9 months old so I don't know if it's an issue with larger and heavier leopard geckos or not.

Edit: They are not escape proof for larger roaches, tried one today and watched it climb out. For smaller/medium sized they work fine.

I ordered that Tot bowl and it is totally awesome! Adult dubias cannot get out of it.

The one I linked? Yes they seem about perfect so far. Translucent top so geckos see prey. Non tippy since it's so wide. Non-skid rubberized bottom. No sharp edges/corners. Only way to get out is if your gecko hops into the bowl(mine do!) and they crawl up and out on it. The light colors also make it easy to see if it needs cleaned. Glad it's working for you!

Yep, the one you linked. I have yet to see her eat out of it, but she just came home on the 2nd so I know she'll be acclimating for a few weeks, so far she's only eaten what I've offered her on tongs, but I have high hopes for the bowl.

So - thoughts on it? I am still having issues with escaping Dubia's but I need something that is clear for my little girl to see them in.

I have them in a clear Tupperware container now and it works good for her to see them, then she hunts and can get in and out of the container but the Dubia's are still getting out to a point

I keep finding the mediums hiding in the rocks...

I've come to the conclusion that I think the little buggers will get out regardless. I've still had a few escapees into the tank. Especially when they try to hid under each other and then the top one figures out it can reach the top, woohoo freedom!

I swear they communicate with each other to figure that method of escape out!!!!!!!!!!

Is it worth buying anyway = less escapee's?
