Feeding Roaches

Anyone here feed roaches on a regular/semi-regular basis?

I got some Orange Spotted Roaches (Blaptica dubia) from a friend to feed my Beardie's. I threw one of them in with my Leo and he jumped on it fast.

I feed lobster roaches sometimes they gobble them down, they are pretty expensive though.

I have Blatta lateralis and Blaberus discoidalis. I go through periods where I use them a lot, and other times where I cut back to let my colonies get back up to size. So far, I've only fed the discoids. The majority of my geckos LOVE them. I picked up the lateralis not too long ago, and I'm raising them at the moment. I haven't tried them, but I'm thinking I'm really going to like them. I love that they aren't so "roachy" looking.

I googled the Blatta lateralis and those look really good. :main_thumbsup: I think I may order some.

Where did you order yours from?

about how many breeding adults do you have and how many geckos/lizards/whatever are you feeding them too?

ive only got a couple fatties, and im thinking 24 breeding discoids will probably give me more than enough.

I have 30ish leos that I feed. Probably 100 adult discoids and who knows how many nymphs, and 400 nymph lateralis. I'm going to feed off some of the lateralis soon, see how the geckos like them before I go crazy breeding them. I hear the lateralis breed like lobsters, which is a good thing!

I got them from a member here...think he goes by the name "Roach" LOL. I'll see if I can find the info for you.

I have blatta lateralis and blaptica dubia. I have roughly 100 geckos not to mention beardies and monitors to feed them to. I go through periods where I use them mainly because I vary diet to most of my collection. I have several hundred adult dubia AND lateralis. Nymphs are far into the thousands and I constantly have to feed off/sell to minimize cannabilism amongst the colonies. It takes a while to get a colony really going as it takes between 4-6 months for them to become sexually mature. A good number to start with would probably be 100 adults of either and maybe another hundred nymphs to get you going. Keep them warm, feed them constantly, keep them hydrated and provide enough hides, check back in 4-6 months and you'll have a colony large enough to support a dozen or so insectorious (sp?) geckos...

What do you feed your roaches?
how do you hydrate them?
Anyone ever try those water gel crytals?
hides? like egg crate right?

I'm planning to order some roaches and see how they do for me.

thanks for the info!

I ordered a 100 pack of Discoids today from Discoids.com. Not a bad price, there's a great caresheet with setup pics on the site as well.
It's worth checking out.

I feed my roaches dog food and an assortment of veggies [and fruits] to provide nutrition and moisture. I have tried the gel crystals before, but they are nutritionally empty, dry out fast, expensive for what you get, and I have a sneaking suspension that some of the artificial traces remain in the feeder's system. As far as hides go, I use egg crates. This works just as well for keeping both my dubia and lateralis colonies. Let me know if you have any other questions...

I just got what I think is a pair of discoids from work today to see how easy they are to breed. If I don't mind keeping them and can get them breeding successfully I think I will definately use them a lot in the future. They're nice because they can't climb plastic and I've read that they grow slowly which would be great for feeding various sized geckos. Anyone who keeps discoids let me know if this is a pair....
