Female cresteds?

This is purely a serious of curious-pet-owner questions.

1. Are cresteds able to be bred based on temps like leos? x degrees should get you females cresteds?
2. Are there really that many fewer females born?
3. Am I really going to have to shell out $150 or so to have a female? Note: I don't need the high quality breeder, just a cute crested :) I'm a pet owner, not a breeder.

Let's see...next show is April 5th...that's only 8 weeks away...$150/8 = $18.75 a week...ouch...maybe October's show!

Once again thanks for humoring me & enlightening me at the same time.

A.) I don't think there is any female incubation temperature, at least not proven, for R. ciliatus

A.) The thing is, breeders aren't as willing to part with them as they are males. So they aren't on the market as often as males.

A.) If you really want a female, then your only other alternative is "shop around". Otherwise, you could purchase a few juvies that you liked and take the chance that one or more of them turn out to be female.

The cheapest I have ever seen a female being sold is around $75 and that is for a smaller female. The first 2 females I bought were at Petco. They were big enough for me to sex them. $50 dollars for each one was a steal for me.

There has been debate on whether or not cresteds are temp sexed dependant, but many people doubt there is. Really there aren't fewer females born like ink_scorpion said many people just don't want to part with them. When you do see those nice looking females expect to pay a pretty penny for them. I bought an adult female wich was a buckskin for 80$ but was originally priced at 100$ My advice would buy some unsexed juvies or some 25-20 gram probable females. Make sure you check petco as well, sometimes you get lucky and pickup a breeder sized female for only 50 bucks. Best of luck to you!!

I can point you in the right direction of a local breeder I know, but I don't think he ships. I could be wrong though. Send me a pm if your interested.

I'm willing to bet they are temp sexed just from the results I've gotten.

Although I'm not sure what "type" of pattern it is.

Heres a quote from Allen repashy himself in an old thread I found on another forum

Hello James,

Anyone who tells you they are incubating cresteds for females is full of sh!t mate. .... They aren't temperature sex dependent, and I have never seen any evidence to support TSD in all the testing myself and friends have done.
From your pics, I would say there is no way you can reliably sex them at that size.... Just let them grow, and you have a 50/50 chance of getting a pair :) .... They look happy in their great cage and appear very healthy..... enjoy your new geckos!
