I am so excited!!!!!! My female is gravid. I can see the white eggs right through the belly. I moved her to her own tank to lay the eggs. Any tips or expert advice about incubating/hatchling will be greatly appreciated.
Tips.
1. Be sure you know how to properly mix the incubation medium to proper ratios. I have been using Vermiculite this season. Simply wet the verm down and squeeze the water out with a tight, clenched fist. Ive had a 100% hatchrate thus far with it this season.
2. Get your incubator running and holding the desired temps ASAP. Do not wait until eggs are laid.
3. Be sure to know if you want completely sealed incubation containers or if you want to add a vent. I personally choose to have sealed containers. Open them every 5-7 days for gas exchange.
4. Determine if eggs are viable
5. When in doubt, incubate.
6. Handle the eggs as little as humanly possible.
7. Be sure to keep an eye on egg health. Denting usually means the incubation medium is to dry or the egg is no good. Mold generally is a sign that the incubation medium is to wet or the egg is weak or not viable. When problems arise, try to find a solution to the problem. If all else fails, refer to tip #5
8. Mark the eggs in some fashion. Determine which side of the egg was "up" and mark it. I use a simple, generic line to determine the top of the egg. The line is to show you if the egg was flipped somehow by a clutch mate or if the incubator was accidentally knocked some how.
9. Wait. Patience is a virtue.
10. DO NOT BOTHER THE EGGS WHILE THEY ARE IN THE INCUBATOR.
In all honesty, the hardest part of the hatching progress is the wait. Also be sure to keep records of the genetics, hatch dates, Dam and Sire, and sex ( if you temp sex for male or female).
My female has one egg in her too, and she just shed 2 days ago. Not long before she lays now. I hope the egg is fertile. If you move the egg into another container (lay box > Incubator) would it be ok to candle the egg to see if it's fertile? Or should you wait a few days.
