Fertilize

So I just got my 20 gal tall for Rusty and its time to start the vive.

I am wanting to do a planted tank. I talked to a experienced landscaper turned pet store person and he told me I needed this kind of fertilizer (I forget the name)

It was pet friendly, but do I really have to get it? Is bed-a-beast not enough?

and is there any specifics you can tell me how to do a planted tank?
I have never had much luck with them.

Was it Peat moss? That's all I have ever used, peat or eco earth and the plants always lived.

No it wasn't peat moss it was like an actual plant fertilizer.
That store is really independent and has all kinds of crazy information sometimes so I didn't totally buy into what he was selling, but all of their planted tanks are just amazing with the fertilizer.
