Hey everyone, just bought my first chameleon on sunday and I'm pretty good on the caring of it. I just have a few questions that I couldn't find anywhere. How old do they have to be to breed? And do they have to weigh a certain amtCan you breed to different types like a jackson with a veiled or different morphs of veiled's etc. Here's a picture of my girl. Also how long does it usually take for them to become gravid with the male. I saw that they don't like being housed together and they don't eat while they are pregnant. And one more ? is how long does it take to hatch the eggs? Are they nocturnal?she has ate crickets(pinheads)

Jordan, I apologize in advance for sounding condescending, but all of the questions you have asked should have been part of your research before buying the chameleon... or ANY new animal for that matter. Since you have only had her for 3 days, hopefully you are not planning on breeding her until you have had her for awhile and are certain she is thriving well.

I find it hard to beleive you couldn't find those question as vieled chams are one of the most common kept chams currently in the US. The amount of information which is available on them should be just short of over whelming, chams are certianly not a species to get into with lack of several years of experince with other lizards.

I wish you lots of luck. I agree that you should have made sure you did all the research before getting a cham. They can go down hill fast and are one of the hardest reptiles to keep in captivity. Get to reading. maybe someone can give you some links to some good websites. I would not expect to much from here though because this is a gecko website but I have noticed a few cham owners on here so Maybe you will get lucky.

Well I've kept leopard geckos for 7 years now, and the chameleon was a spur of the momentdecision I made out of amazement at the show. She is eating wondeful and doing well, but I just couldn't find those ?'s I asked that's all.

They need to be 6 months or older to breed. They can only be mated to the same species. They will usually mate almost instantly once put togehter and you would need to literally watch them mate and see if the female turns dark after mating, as soon as she does you have to put her back in her cage alone, some females will be OK with the male for 24-48 hours, some want out immediately. They will lay almost 30 days to the minute of mating. It takes them 7-9 months to hatch.

Drip, mist, drip and feed feed feed!

She looks like she should be eating larger food, more like 3/8" crickets not pinheads. Calcium is a large MUST and lots of it. Also d3 or a UVB, if you can get her in the sun a few hours a day that is even better.

Read the links Brian Posted and chameleonnews.com, adcham.com and if you need more help, just ask!

With how large the female veiled clutches can be i never bred my females until they where 1.5 years old. AS for cross breading a jackson to a veiled, nope. Veileds lay egss Jacksons give birth to live born little chameleons. now they do cross breed panthers with different species of panther chameleons. As for breeding veileds its not that hard but you really need to do your research before you go a head and do it. Veiled eggs take for ever to hatch, trust me a long time. When a female veiled is gravid she turns vlack with turquois and yellow dots on her. Males are really aggressive you you need to be really careful when introducing the two together. I think that shoud help you start out but you really need to buy some books and do a bunch of research on the net. As for owning leopard geckos in the past, leopard geckos are simple to take care of. Chamelons are night to day compared to leopard geckos. Hope this help you out in your start of a new species of reptiles.

Your female will still lay eggs regardless of her being mated, so make sure that you have a bucket/spot at the bottom of the cage for her to lay her eggs. Make sure not to give too much D3, they can OD on it. 2-3 times a week is good for adults, babies (1-7 months old) and egg laying females need 3-4 times a week.

I lost a whole clutch of Jacksons by over supplementing.

Here is a care sheet I made:
