This is my first ever 'build' and I'm going to post updates as I go. Feel free to chime in if you know of a better way of doing things, as I'd hate to get to the end and discover a fatal flaw in design.
Anyway, this setup is based around an 8 gallon Fluval Ebi aquarium I won last year and haven't used yet. Measurements are 12 x 12 x 14 and will be set up for Viper geckos. I'll be using a fine quartz sand minimally as a substrate for what areas are exposed per recommendation of the Thad at Ohio Gecko. The goal is to make a decent looking, multi-piece setup.

Supplies
- 3/4 inch styrofoam sheets - $6/7 at Lowes
- Super glue
- Sanding block
- Steak knife
- scissors
- bathroom caulk
- unsanded grout
- spray on sealant

The tank. I pulled the premade background off already.

After two nights of cutting out layers, it was a learn as you go sort of thing. Scrapped the first project and ended up with one I liked. Here are the main three pieces. Each of the hides are accessible with the removal of a piece or two.

And, put together.

All four pieces. The fourth is a shaped 'background' of sorts.

And again, together. I forgot to take a picture after I sanded down the main pieces when I stuck it in the tank for fit.

Next step will be to caulk the gaps and add some more shape. Any thoughts so far? At this point, I haven't purchased a heat pad yet. I could either lay it on the back half or the right half, as the back right corner needs to be warm for the humid hide and the front left corner needs to be cool for the water dish. Again, I'm open to suggestions! This is a first attempt and I still have 4 sheets of styrofoam.

Just a thought once you grout it it'll add thickness so you might want to trim the sides where it'll fit inside better. Looks good so far though keep updating :)

Jonathan - I used the sandpaper block from Lowes on the edges. I'll get back to working on it here in a bit and post pictures later tonight of the whole thing smoothed out

Beastws6 - Thanks! I was going to do a test run of grout/paint/sealant to see how much it expanded before I took the actual structure down any more.

If your having trouble and sanding isn't working for you could always smooth some silicone on it then grout over? The great stuff foam might be easier to shape also?

Just curious what brand of grout are you using? I got some styrofoam all shaped out for my 40 gal breeder just haven't got any grout yet.

I'm using Polyblend sanded grout - 180 Sandstone. I make it following the directions on the box, but I only make a pound at a time to save as much as I can. I've made two with it now. One was with Styrofoam and one with Great Stuff. I'll post pictures of them both later as they're drying right now.

I haven't grouted yet, but I have Laticrete unsanded grout in sand beige. I figured the unsanded would give it a bit of texture. I wasn't able to work on it last night, but I'll try to get some updated pictures in the next day or two!

Grouted and painted.

Sprayed on a layer of sealant, threw on some play sand for texture, and sprayed on another layer of sealant when it was dry.
Layer 1 - You can see where the paint/grout chipped a bit. It's also chipped under the lip of the tupperware. Thankfully, it's all hidden. I suppose I could repaint and touch up, but ah well.

And the finished product. The blue from the lid of the tupperware doesn't show nearly as much if you're just looking at the tank (without a flash).

Any thoughts?

Looks pretty good! Wish I had the patience to do something like that. I get distracted too easily by other things... 3 unfinished hides on the work table right now lol.
