Hi,
Can anybody explain/show me how to recognize growing follicles throght the skin, because i can't see them on my females? How to measure them?

I've found an article about changes in a females behavior in a diffrent periods of a vitellogenesis. There is one information which is very interesting for me, authors ascribe the biggest receptivity to a male to a late vitellogenesis, when follicles measure 12-14 mm. It's very useful information, by using this method you can exactly know when to put male in a female cage.

Female leopard geckos ovulate (produce egg follicles) throughout breeding season. If the follicles are fertilized, (and occasionally even if they are not) they will develop into eggs.

When a femal is ovulating, you will see pink, sometimes white, follicles in the upper right side and the mid-lower left side of her abdomen. They can be anywhere from .75 - 1.5 cm in diameter. You may need to bend the female slightly backward over a finger to put tension on the abdomen to see this.

Here is a link to a photo of an ovulating female, that is also gravid:

Oh okay, I knew of them, just didn't know they were called follicles, thanks ;)

But so you can actually measure those to predict when to put your male and female together? That's very interesting..

Thank you very much for help :) .

I have tried this method today and it is working. I've used 60 grams female and a 38 grams male, earlier she was biting him and today she was very calm so male was able to do his work :) . Follicels measured 12 mm

This raises a question that I would like to ask... I think I know the answer from what I've read in this thread. I thought that once a female was in the process of generating, laying and recovering from eggs that she would be ovulating 24x7.

I attempted four secondary matings last night with three males and four females. The first and second pairings went well. The third and fourth did not go well. Both females got in a row with the poor male. The first female ran once and battled the male on the second attempt while the second female put in with the poor male got all freaked out and started trying to bite her tail and vent area. The male barely got close to her. I pulled her out before battle ensued.

I feel bad for the poor guy, he was doing the tail thing before during and after the pairings. He must have been sniffing out the ovulating females.

I guess they don't ovulate 24x7 while laying eggs?? I'll have to try this measuring the follicles thing!

Actually, it seems like they produce egg follicles about every 2 weeks during breeding season. Sometimes, once the follicles are fertilized the female knows it. she may reject the male's breeding attempts.

I have read that once mated and the female starts producing eggs she doesn't need to remate for the whole season. Anyone know anything about this?
