Also and Italian tidbit:

The Italian town of Taranto had a problem in the 1500s with hairy spiders they thought to have a deadly bite. The people were convinced that the only cure for one of these bites was to dance an extremely energetic dance for hours, or even days, without stopping. Musicians would roam the streets and fields, looking to play music for those afflicted. The dance became known as the tarantella, and the spider: the Tarantula.

My family is from Muro Lucano. I figured you would know them. I'm third generation Italian and I grew up listening to those and many from Louie Prima, Enrico Caruso, Al Martino, etc.
