760 is the max width on most of mine, even on scalable designs. I always program for the lowest common denominator. On 800 x 600 resolutions (which people still use), a maximized browser will not horizontally scroll at 760 pixels in width.

I have three designs made by me at hand right now. One of them is 780px, other is 760px and the third is set with percentage (90%) so I don't know really. I always check that they fit in a 800px screen, because I had a laptop that didn't support higher resolutions than 800x600 not too long ago and hated when I had to use the horizontal scroll (almost always).

Yeah but not many people still use the smaller res anymore. 850 is just right for the higher res.

You would be surprised how many people out there still work on 800x600! I don't know how they do it. And if I was working on a res that small and would have to scroll left and right to see the rest of a web page I'd close it without even looking at it.

I don't use much of the page on the far right for important things. ;)

What is yours Marcia? It fits fine on my monitor.
The main table seems to be fixed at 980px; I would strongly recommend to use percentages for her website instead of a fixed size. The problem is that the image of the header and the 'welcome' banner are 970px and there's no way to fix that but making new images. It must be very annoying for 800x600 users...

I agree with Ryan, you should not go past 760 if you want to reach your maximum audience. You would be surprised how many people use 800x600. I use 1280x1024 but never maximize my browser. If I have to scroll left or right I'm gone. When I took my webdesign courses years ago this could not be stressed enough. Also you need to make sure your pages are cross browser compatable. It's easy to design something spectacular in IE and have it fall apart in Netscape or Firefox. Webdesign is easy if programming for only 1 browser.

Vertical scrolling is acceptable horizontal scrolling is a mortal sin.

If you are selling something you want to be able to reach as many people as you possibly can.

Other food for thought. You would be surprised how many people use earlier versions of IE as well that don't handle JavaScript very well.

I am currently undergoing a total website rebuild, and I want my pages to be the maximum width that can be viewed on most screens. I built my website myself several years ago using a book and FrontPage, and I knew nothing about how tables and screen sizes can be viewed differently on browsers other than IE. It wasn't until I went on FireFox that I realized my website looked awful! LOL!!!

Marcia, the only thing that looks odd to me is the table/cell borders (some of them are missing) when I view it in FF.
