Actually, with further research, it appears to be a Dekay's Brown Snake.

I was going to ask how big the bricks were, to try judging how long this little guy was. Eyeballing it, those are not the usual proportions of a juvenile garter, head size relative to the width of the body. Dekays are little things, rarely exceeding fourteen, fifteen inches tops, so it's a possibility if those are normal sized bricks.

If it's still around... it's obviously keel scaled, the head and ventral scalation will be useful in IDing it. Especially if it's got a divided anal plate.

Yep, you're right. Thanks. The ventral and head scales, as well as the divided anal plate, gave it away. It was definitely a Dekays. I appreciate the help. I let it go, pretty close to where I found it.
