I have had a gecko fall ill within the last month and here's the story...
Dandilyon, a very healthy male leopard gecko, weighing around 75 grams at his peak started having eye problems. We thought it was eye caps or something but his eyes have since turned blood red or the pupils are so dilated that any light causes him to squirm away frantically. also, his head has been getting more and more....I guess you could say dry, but scratches and thin lines are showing up on his head and he is starting to bleed a little bit from them.
We took him to the vet and he said that it was an unknown cause for this but that he had seen geckos with this problem, eye problems and loss of color at that time, with other leopard gecko owners. He gave us baytril and some eye drops to help him out.
After three weeks of Baytril and the eye drops, his eyes began getting goob-y and were shut more often than not. His scratches on his head got worse and he refused to drink anything. We soaked him daily after one week and still are to this day. We also feed him water daily through a syringe as well as chicken baby food. His weight has stayed more or less stable...with a slight loss but nothing severe yet.
We took him in again for a check up and the vet said that it is most likely a viral infection but that there is no known way to combat it. There was research being done now on it but it is unfunded and he said it will likely take a while for results. He said to keep up on Baytril to make sure no other infections complicate things more.
And today we decided to take a look at his belly...which was feeling very loose for the last couple of days and noticed it was just a bag of shed stuck to his belly from his legs and neck. It was ripping off so we decided to help him. As we did so, his shed stopped at his sides and any more skin that came off revealed red and glistening skin, suggesting that it was not meant to be taken off and Dandilyon was in obvious pain so we had to stop.
Has anyone seen this type of problem with geckos. Our temperatures are all fine and we are keeping his humidity up to as far as it can go, as well as the daily soaks. could there be some vitamin deficiency that is causing his shed to not form properly, hence the shed on the belly but nowhere else? The vet has not prescribed anything other than to make Dandilyon feel as comfortable as possible. any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Also, terribly sorry but my camera is dead at the moment so no pictures at this time....will hopefully get some up soon to illustrate the situation better.
