Gecko is sick....Just like that?

Hello all. Just a little back story first then the questions. First of all I have had my gecko for about 4 years now and he's always eaten like a champ and was very active. His cage was always clean (water included) nothing out of the ordinary....until now. I was trying to fatten him up a bit because truthfully there was some personal issues going on and I didnt have the time to feed him properly so I fed him waxworms for a while.

I got back on my routine and did a very thorough cleaning of his cage (20g L) I put him in a big shoebox that was empty and put a book on top to keep him in. It was dark so he wouldnt freak out. After cleaning for a short time I noticed he had gotten out of a small hole and was coming toward me. I had a choice word or two and put him back in and covered the hole. Again nothing out of the ordinary.......BUT....

I put him back in his home just the way it was accept cleaner, everything in the same exact place. Since then he hasn't eaten, he's lethargic, no spunk whatsoever, and he's dying to put it bluntly. He's developed cuts in his "armpits" and one right by his "testicals" He stays only in his hot side or in his humid hide and during this time he has shed 3 times? I cant get him to eat a single thing. It sucks to see him like this and I hate it.

What went wrong?

Can you post how you have your enclosure set up? What did you use to clean with? Did you allow it to ventilate after it was cleaned if you used any sort of chemical?

its a 20 gallon long with grey carpet, Hot side with a heat pad and a temp probe, and a cool side. Water dish, humid hide and calcium dish to. I cleaned it with regular water and a clean scrub brush, let it air out, replaced the carpet, and put him back in.

He shed again last night but hes not finished yet. He just shed last week. I heard him redecorating last night to get the skin off which is more activity ive seen him in in a while.

Is it possible he cut himself in that small hole he escaped from and it got infected?
