Gecko Recess

I have seen a few post lately about "gecko exersise" and I got an idea. I have a little folding play pen that I bought for my guinea pig but he quickly outgrew it and began jumping it rather quickly. So it has been sitting dormant for quite a while until I found a new use for it! I call it gecko recess! I let the females roam around for a while and then my male alone etc. I watched like a hawk during the process.

I dont think it will become a regular habit for some of my more skiddish geckos who began to show signs of stress. However for Luna my most curious gecko it may become regular due to the fact that she seemed to enjoy it the most.

Here is an aerial view.

The sides cannot be climbed due to the fact that they are vertical

It passed the escape proof test by Luna (she is my little escape artist)

I guess it could also be called a gecko mixer. :p

That's cool, you should put stuff in it that they could play with, like toilet paper tubes and blankets and boxes and stuff!

They love to explore :p

I think there should be a sticky on anthropomorphizing. Reptiles do not want, need or enjoy "recess". It more than likely stresses them out.

Somehow I have a hard time believing that..

It's clear by my baby Leo's body language that he enjoys being curious and exploring in and out of things, he doesn't try and run if I put him on the ground he walks around, smelling and tasting everything, climbing in and out of everything I give him to explore, and sometimes I hide meal worms in the tubes so when he explores it turns into a hunting mission..he sometimes comes back to me to lay on my hand or climb up on me, but soon is off and exploring things again.

You can tell when something is stressed, and yes it may stress some gecko's out, but if they are not showing signs of being stressed out then I think it would be fine.

They seem like genuinely curious animals, so why not let them be curious about the environment they see out of their tank?

And the OP even said for some of her more stressed gecko's it won't be the thing for them.

Thinking the same thing. You should set up an actual recess with really cool logs, and hides. Just make sure nothing is too high too close to the edges :p

Ill take this post as you dont understand what the word anthropomorphize means.

Yes I do. I didn't say the Gecko had the curiosity of a person or is stressed like a person.

But animals can show signs of being stressed, and animals can show signs of being "adventurous".

I think if they aren't showing any signs of stress, and actively exploring, there should be no harm against letting them explore.

Just like there are some Leo's that prefer not to be held, and some that tolerate it better then others.

Some may enjoy exploring a new environment if they feel safe enough, and others may be terrified.

That's Funny

A neat idea if you want to give your Leos something else to do.

Is that a Tremper Albino Patternless in there that you have?
The one with no pattern, and a white tail.

If so, very nice!

I dont think it's anthropomorphizing to allow geckos some open room.
Everyone does it with other animals (dont folks take their dogs for walks, and not just to poop!!), it just gives them some space, if they want it.
